About the role
The Chief Events Officer (CEvO) leads the planning, development, and execution of The Open Economics Project's educational events, competitions, and community-based programs.
OEP's mission is pursued not only through digital learning materials, but also through opportunities for students and communities to engage with economics through writing, discussion, collaboration, and practical learning experiences.
These initiatives require careful administration, clear procedures, reliable coordination, and consistent participant experiences.
The CEvO will oversee the operational structure that makes such programs possible, ensuring that events are well-organized, educationally purposeful, accessible, and capable of being repeated and improved.
This is not simply an event-promotion position. It is a leadership role responsible for translating educational program ideas into successfully delivered initiatives.
The mandate
To establish a reliable, scalable framework for OEP's academic competitions, workshops, and educational events, ensuring that each initiative is professionally managed and consistent with the organization's mission.
Responsibilities
Event Strategy and Planning
- Develop and maintain an organizational calendar for competitions, workshops, and educational events.
- Establish program objectives, timelines, responsibilities, and delivery milestones.
- Create reusable planning templates and event operating procedures.
- Coordinate event priorities with OEP's broader organizational strategy.
Academic Competitions
- Oversee operational planning for essay competitions and other academic initiatives.
- Coordinate registration, submission timelines, participant communications, and results announcements.
- Organize judging workflows and support the administration of awards and recognition.
- Work with academic leadership to maintain fair and consistent evaluation procedures.
Workshops and Community Programs
- Coordinate virtual and in-person workshops with ambassadors, facilitators, and institutional partners.
- Develop event preparation and delivery procedures.
- Help identify appropriate facilitators, educational materials, and program formats.
- Ensure responsibilities for participant safety, accessibility, and supervision are appropriately assigned.
Program Evaluation
- Maintain reliable records of event participation and completion.
- Collect appropriate feedback from participants and organizers.
- Document operational challenges and recommend improvements.
- Support OEP's quarterly impact reporting through verifiable program information.
Who we’re looking for
Applicants should demonstrate strong organizational ability, communication skills, dependable follow-through, and the capacity to coordinate people across different schedules.
Experience planning school programs, academic competitions, conferences, workshops, nonprofit initiatives, or community events is valuable.
Candidates should be comfortable maintaining schedules, delegating responsibilities, solving operational problems, and communicating professionally with external participants.
The ability to remain organized under changing circumstances is particularly important.
First 90 Days
The CEvO should aim to:
- Review existing and proposed OEP events and competitions.
- Develop a six-month event and program calendar.
- Create standardized event planning, registration, and evaluation templates.
- Define responsibilities for facilitators, judges, and event volunteers.
- Produce a delivery plan for one priority event or academic initiative.
Working together
The CEvO will coordinate with executive leadership, the Chief Academic Officer, outreach personnel, ambassadors, and workshop facilitators.
The role requires proactive planning, regular reporting, and advance communication when timelines or deliverables are at risk.
Events involving minors must follow applicable safeguarding procedures. The CEvO is responsible for ensuring that such requirements are incorporated into planning, but is not automatically authorized to act independently of OEP's safeguarding or fiscal-sponsor arrangements.
Why it matters
A successful educational program is not defined merely by attendance. It must be organized with purpose, administered responsibly, and designed to create a meaningful learning experience. The Chief Events Officer will help OEP deliver that standard consistently.
