About the role
The Director of Global Content & Localization will lead efforts to make The Open Economics Project's educational resources usable across languages, regions, and educational contexts.
Translating educational content requires more than reproducing words in another language. Economic terminology, institutional examples, diagrams, assessment expectations, and pedagogical meaning must all be preserved with care.
As OEP expands its international educational resources, it requires a structured approach to translation, editorial review, publication standards, and the responsible adaptation of materials for different audiences.
The Director will help establish this infrastructure and coordinate the contributors necessary to sustain it.
The mandate
To build a reliable multilingual educational publishing process that enables OEP's resources to reach additional audiences without compromising academic accuracy or instructional quality.
Responsibilities
Localization Strategy
- Identify potential priority languages and regions for educational localization.
- Assess translation needs based on educational demand, contributor capacity, and program priorities.
- Establish a realistic translation and publication roadmap.
- Coordinate localization priorities with academic and organizational leadership.
Translation and Editorial Standards
- Develop consistent standards for economic terminology and translated instructional content.
- Establish review workflows involving language proficiency and academic accuracy.
- Identify conceptual or contextual differences that require careful adaptation.
- Maintain consistency between original and translated educational resources.
Contributor Coordination
- Recruit or coordinate translators and multilingual reviewers as authorized.
- Assign translation projects with clear scopes and deadlines.
- Maintain translation progress records and version histories.
- Support contributors with terminology guidance and editorial feedback.
Publication and Rights Management
- Ensure translations retain required attribution and licensing information.
- Document substantive adaptations and changes.
- Coordinate review of translated materials before publication.
- Work with publication and academic teams to maintain updated editions.
Who we’re looking for
Applicants should demonstrate excellent English communication and strong proficiency in at least one additional language.
Experience in translation, editorial work, multilingual publishing, or localization is especially valuable.
Candidates should possess an appreciation for academic precision and ideally have familiarity with economics terminology.
Previous experience coordinating contributors or maintaining multilingual resources is preferred.
First 90 Days
The Director should aim to:
- Review OEP's available educational content and translation readiness.
- Recommend priority languages and initial resource candidates.
- Develop a multilingual editorial and terminology framework.
- Establish a translation-review and version-control process.
- Coordinate a pilot translation and academic review of a manageable resource.
Working together
This position collaborates with the Chief Academic Officer and other relevant content and publication teams.
The Director is responsible for managing the localization process, not personally translating every language in which OEP may eventually publish.
Translated materials must receive appropriate rights and academic review before being released as official OEP publications.
Why it matters
Knowledge cannot serve a truly international audience if the means of understanding it remain confined to one language or educational context. This role helps make global publication both practical and academically responsible.
