Production Possibilities Curve

Scarcity, tradeoffs, efficiency, and growth on one frontier between two goods.

Interactive modelAdjust the controls to explore
KyCxPPCAUunattainableConsumer goodsCapital goods
Point A: efficientFrontier: 100% of base

What changed?

Point A is efficient (100% of capacity in use). The frontier is at its base position. Opportunity cost rises as production tilts toward one good (bowed-out PPC: resources are specialized).

Key interpretation

Points on the frontier are efficient, inside is inefficient, outside is unattainable with current resources and technology.

Common mistake

Growth is an outward shift of the whole curve — moving along the curve is not growth.

AP exam tip

When asked about opportunity cost shape, tie bowed-out to increasing opportunity cost from specialized resources.
